Giovanni Mazzeo

PhD Student

I am a PhD Student in the Nielsen Lab and the Integrative Biology Department. I graduated from University of Virginia in May 2026 with a double major in Mathematics and Philosophy, where I did research on detecting seasonal balancing selection. I’m broadly interested in methods development and theory in population genetics and phylogenetics. Recently I’ve been thinking about developing formalisms for horizontal gene transfer that are analogous to ARGs, and more general problems about inference over spaces of combinatorial objects like trees and graphs that can be highly singular.
